This page describes experimentation with various alternative means of presenting 5Is, as a means of teaching and using the framework in ways that enable users to handle its high level of detail.
Both graphic and spreadsheet versions are shown.
Graphic version of 5Is
The mindmap application XMind has been used to show the 5Is Framework at variable levels of detail to suit the user. A jpeg version of the collapsed diagram and the fully-expanded one are below.

This is the full expansion – not readable – only for illustrative purposes. It makes the advantages of expand/collapse facility obvious!

The same diagram is downloadable with readable text.
Best to read is a semi-interactive (expanding/collapsing) html version in Dropbox here (on the Dropbox page, click the Download button) or with limited functionality here (click on the numbers on the right to expand, click on the junctions of lines to collapse).
The best way of editing the diagram is to download the free version of XMind which will enable you to expand and collapse branches at will, to modify the branches, add notes etc in a limited way. If you can’t install this software on your computer, you can download a free standalone version onto a hard drive or data stick – subject to any work-related security restrictions of course.
You can view and download the expanding/collapsing Xmind graphic file of 5Is here.
If you do publish any modifications, please circulate/ cite as ‘ modified from original on https://crimeframeworks.com ‘

Spreadsheet versions of 5Is
XMind can export to Excel and a spreadsheet equivalent of the 5Is diagram is downloadable here.

Finally, here’s an alternative spreadsheet format, using limited 5Is headings adapted for the Graffolution project which sought to balance control of illegal graffiti against legitimate expression.
Please send feedback on the utility of the diagram/spreadsheet; your suggestions for modified or radically alternative diagrammatic representation of 5Is; and whether you think any alternative graphical software platforms to XMind might be better. Also whether any alternative spreadsheet layouts might be helpful.
And if anyone wants to develop interactive software versions of 5Is, please contact also.
